A recent study published in BMC Medicine indicates that a sedentary lifestyle significantly increases the risk of various cancers, while even short bursts of daily movement can substantially lower these risks. The research, led by John J. Mitchell, a senior
research fellow at University College London’s Institute of Sport, Exercise & Health, found that replacing sitting time with any form of movement, including standing, can reduce cancer risks. The study, which tracked the daily activity of 59,218 adult participants using smartwatches over a week, analyzed medical records eight years later to identify the incidence of 13 cancers associated with physical inactivity, such as bladder, breast, bowel, kidney, and stomach cancers. Participants who replaced 30 minutes of movement with 30 minutes of sitting saw an 8% increase in cancer risks. Conversely, incorporating even a few minutes of vigorous activity, like jogging or rushing up stairs, was found to be most effective in lowering cancer risks. Mitchell emphasized that "every movement counts in the day," highlighting the cumulative effect of daily behaviors on health.
