What's Happening?
A UK study led by researchers at King's College London and University College London has found that older adults with high autistic traits are more likely to experience worsening anxiety as they age. The study, published in Nature Mental Health, analyzed
data from the PROTECT study, which included over 5,000 adults aged 50-91. Researchers identified three groups based on anxiety patterns, with a small group showing increased anxiety over time. People with high autistic traits were four times more likely to be in this group, highlighting the need for early identification and support.
Why It's Important?
This study sheds light on the mental health challenges faced by older adults with autistic traits, a group often overlooked in research. The findings emphasize the importance of recognizing and addressing anxiety in this population to improve their quality of life. The study also calls for tailored support and adapted therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, to prevent mild anxiety from becoming severe. These insights could influence healthcare policies and practices, ensuring better mental health support for older adults with autistic traits.
