A team led by Brian Walsh from Boston University has proposed a novel approach to protect Earth from powerful solar storms by enhancing the planet's magnetosphere. The concept, known as StormWall, involves deploying a fleet of spacecraft into geosynchronous
orbit, each equipped with materials like barium, lithium, sodium, or calcium. These materials can be vaporized to create a cloud of electrically charged plasma, which would strengthen the magnetosphere's boundary against solar winds. This artificial plasma aims to reduce the intensity of geomagnetic storms by more than half, potentially safeguarding satellites, global communications, GPS systems, and electrical grids from severe disruptions.
