What's Happening?
The Indiana Attorney General's Office has reported that numerous Hoosiers, including sports stars and the Attorney General himself, have unclaimed property waiting to be claimed. The state returned a record $88 million to residents in 2025, and more than
$47 million has been returned so far in 2026. Unclaimed property includes wages, refunds, insurance proceeds, dormant bank accounts, and more. Notable figures such as NBA legend Reggie Miller and former Colts quarterback Andrew Luck have unclaimed checks and wages. Indiana law mandates businesses to report and remit unclaimed property to the Attorney General's Office, allowing residents to search and claim their funds online.
Why It's Important?
Unclaimed property laws are designed to protect consumers by ensuring that assets like uncashed checks and forgotten refunds are returned to their rightful owners. The significant amount of unclaimed property highlights the importance of these laws in safeguarding consumer rights and preventing companies from retaining funds as revenue. The process of claiming unclaimed property can provide financial relief to individuals and businesses, contributing to economic stability. The widespread nature of unclaimed property, affecting one in seven Americans, underscores the need for public awareness and proactive measures to claim these assets. The initiative by the Indiana Attorney General's Office serves as a model for other states in managing unclaimed property effectively.
