What's Happening?
Indiana Governor Mike Braun announced the launch of a new Work-Based Learning Digital Resource Hub aimed at expanding career-connected learning opportunities for K-12 students across the state. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Indiana Commission
for Higher Education, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE), and Ascend Indiana. The hub provides a suite of practical tools designed to assist schools, employers, and regional partners in implementing work-based learning programs that align with Indiana's updated high school diploma requirements. These new standards offer students increased flexibility to earn 'readiness seals' for college preparation, immediate career entry, or military service. Key resources within the hub include a Work-Based Learning Training Plan and Partnership Agreement Template, an Employer Readiness Tool, a WBL Experience Overview detailing 11 types of work-based learning, a Design Guide for educators, and a Roles and Responsibilities guide for stakeholders. The project is supported by a $100,000 grant from the Commission for Higher Education to Ascend Indiana, which will fund technical assistance, educator resources, and statewide peer learning.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is crucial for Indiana's educational and economic landscape as it directly addresses the need to better prepare students for post-graduation success in a rapidly evolving job market. By connecting classroom learning with real-world workplace experiences, the hub aims to equip students with practical skills, help them explore career pathways, and build professional networks. This alignment with new diploma standards signifies a strategic shift towards a more career-focused education system, potentially reducing skills gaps and improving workforce readiness. Employers stand to gain by having access to a more skilled and prepared talent pipeline, while students benefit from clearer pathways to employment or higher education. The investment in work-based learning infrastructure also signals Indiana's commitment to fostering a robust and adaptable workforce, which can attract businesses and stimulate economic growth within the state.
What's Next?
The Work-Based Learning Digital Resource Hub is now operational, and schools and employers can access its resources and the Intermediary Directory via Ascend Indiana's website. Over the coming months, Ascend Indiana will utilize the $100,000 grant to provide technical assistance, develop additional educator resources, and facilitate statewide peer learning sessions to support the widespread implementation of work-based learning programs. Regional intermediaries identified by Ascend Indiana will continue to play a vital role in connecting local schools with employers. The success of this initiative will likely be measured by the adoption rate of the hub's tools, the number of students participating in work-based learning, and ultimately, the improved readiness of Indiana's K-12 graduates for their chosen post-secondary paths. Continued collaboration between educational institutions, businesses, and state agencies will be essential for the sustained growth and effectiveness of these programs.
