The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has confirmed an outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) in Washington County, Wisconsin. This confirmation follows reports of over 100 deceased deer in the area. Two wild deer found near Richfield
and West Bend tested positive for the virus. The DNR collected samples after landowners and residents reported clusters of dead deer, many of which were found in or near water sources. Currently, the disease has only been detected in southern Washington County. EHD is caused by a virus transmitted by small biting flies, commonly known as midges or “no-see-ums.” It is important to note that the disease is not transmitted directly from deer to deer and does not pose a risk to humans, even through contact with infected deer or venison. Infected deer often exhibit symptoms such as excessive salivation, foaming around the nose and mouth, weakness, and an unusual approachability. They may also develop fevers, leading them to seek water to cool down, which explains why carcasses are frequently discovered near ponds and other water bodies.
