What's Happening?
Egis, an engineering consultancy, has been appointed to support the UK government's Nuclear Team in assessing the social and environmental costs and benefits of new nuclear technologies. The appointment
to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Nuclear Energy Regulatory Justification Services Framework positions Egis as an approved supplier to provide technical advice and expertise in support of the UK's statutory nuclear justification process. Egis will contribute to the UK's ambition and roadmap to net zero, ensuring that innovation and growth in the nuclear sector are underpinned by robust safety, sustainability, and regulatory standards.
Why It's Important?
The appointment of Egis is significant as the UK seeks to maximize the benefits of new nuclear technologies, including gigawatt-scale reactors, small modular reactors (SMRs), advanced modular reactors (AMRs), and future fusion energy facilities. With rapidly increasing energy demands from data centers and electric vehicles, coupled with the urgent need to achieve net zero, the development and roll-out of novel technologies are critical to the UK's economic performance. Egis' expertise, developed over decades in the French nuclear industry, will support the UK's nuclear sector, contributing to innovation and growth while ensuring safety and sustainability.
