What's Happening?
The Cutting Fences Foundation, founded by occupational therapist Kendra Lewis, is making significant strides in supporting disabled farmers and ranchers in Montana. Established from a doctoral capstone project, the foundation addresses the lack of resources
for agricultural workers with disabilities. Its core initiative, the Adaptive Equipment Loan Closet, provides free access to specialized tools like Action Trackstanders and TerrainHoppers, which are essential for rugged ranch work. This initiative not only aids in physical tasks but also significantly impacts the mental health of the beneficiaries by restoring their ability to contribute to their families and communities. The foundation is also working towards establishing a permanent 'Rural Resource Barn' to enhance resource accessibility in Central Montana.
Why It's Important?
The work of the Cutting Fences Foundation is crucial in maintaining the livelihoods and mental well-being of disabled farmers and ranchers in Montana. By providing adaptive equipment, the foundation helps these individuals continue their work, thereby preserving their independence and reducing the financial and emotional burdens on their families. This initiative highlights the importance of accessibility and support for disabled individuals in rural areas, where resources are often scarce. The foundation's efforts also underscore the broader need for similar programs across the U.S. to support disabled workers in various industries.
What's Next?
The foundation plans to establish a 'Rural Resource Barn' in partnership with MonTECH, Montana's assistive technology program, to make resources more accessible. This development will likely enhance the foundation's ability to support more individuals across the state. Additionally, the foundation's Quality of Life Fund will continue to assist families with unexpected medical costs and help individuals secure permanent ownership of adaptive equipment. These efforts are expected to further empower disabled farmers and ranchers, ensuring that physical limitations do not hinder their ability to lead fulfilling lives.
