A study conducted by Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences suggests that listening to heavy metal music may increase an individual's pain tolerance. The research involved 122 metal fans at the Wacken Open Air festival in northern
Germany in 2023. Participants were divided into two groups: one tested before the festival and another several days after experiencing live music. Both groups underwent a cold-water immersion test, where they placed a hand and forearm in cold water for as long as they could tolerate. The findings, published in Scientific Reports, indicated that those tested after the festival were able to endure the cold for a longer duration, although they reported the pain level as equally intense. Researchers hypothesize that the effect could be linked to the intense shared experience of live music, the release of oxytocin, and the genre's embrace of intense emotions.
