What's Happening?
Petrodec has successfully completed a significant offshore decommissioning campaign in the UK Southern North Sea using its OBANA heavy-lift jackup vessel. This marks the first operational deployment of the OBANA, which removed the jacket and topside from
the Galahad normally unmanned installation and multiple structures from the Amethyst field. The structures have been transported to a decommissioning yard in the Netherlands for dismantling. The OBANA, completed in 2025, is designed for complex offshore removal operations and features a 2,000-tonne crane capable of handling up to 12,000 tonnes of deck load.
Why It's Important?
The successful deployment of the OBANA vessel highlights the growing demand for integrated decommissioning solutions in the North Sea, as operators accelerate the removal of end-of-life assets. This development is significant for the offshore industry, showcasing advancements in technology that enable safer and more efficient decommissioning operations. The project also underscores the importance of sustainable practices in the energy sector, as decommissioning plays a crucial role in reducing environmental impacts and repurposing offshore sites. The use of advanced vessels like the OBANA could set new standards for future decommissioning projects globally.
