What's Happening?
The Gulf of Maine North Atlantic Time Series (GNATS) project, funded by NASA, has been monitoring surface seawater conditions since 1998. The project focuses on the marine food web's base, sampling phytoplankton and observing biogeochemistry and ocean
color. The data collected is used to validate NASA's ocean color satellites, including the recently launched PACE satellite. The project aims to link microbial data to satellite observations to model long-term biogeochemical changes in the Gulf of Maine.
