What's Happening?
Bihar is actively pursuing Geographical Indication (GI) tags to protect and promote its cultural and agricultural heritage. The state has secured 14 GI tags for products such as Madhubani Painting, Bhagalpur silk, and Shahi litchi. Despite this progress,
Bihar lags behind states like Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal in the number of GI recognitions. The state government, along with agricultural universities, is working to increase awareness and applications for GI tags. Recently, 28 new applications have been filed, covering a range of products from traditional crops to ethnic foods. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to safeguard traditional knowledge and enhance the economic potential of local products.
Why It's Important?
Securing GI tags is crucial for Bihar as it provides legal protection against misuse of traditional products and helps in differentiating them in the market. This can lead to premium pricing, increased export potential, and rural enterprise development. The initiative not only aims to preserve cultural heritage but also to boost the local economy by integrating traditional products into global markets. The growing number of authorized GI users in Bihar indicates stronger participation from local farmers and artisans, which is essential for translating GI recognition into tangible economic benefits.
What's Next?
Bihar plans to continue its efforts to secure more GI tags, with ongoing applications for products like Sonachur rice and Dudhiya Maldah mango. The state is also focusing on increasing the number of authorized GI users to ensure that local producers can fully benefit from the economic opportunities provided by GI recognition. This approach reflects a shift towards ecosystem-based GI management, integrating quality assurance, branding, and market linkage strategies.
