What's Happening?
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) is planning the long-term preservation of Hikawa Maru, Japan's last surviving ocean liner, now displayed in Yokohama. The vessel, considered a nationally important cultural property, survived World War II and is celebrated
as a key part of Japan's maritime heritage. An expert committee will meet to establish technical and conservation policies for repairs and explore exhibition strategies to revitalize the Yokohama waterfront. NYK aims to preserve the ship's historic shipbuilding and design heritage while ensuring safety.
Why It's Important?
The preservation of Hikawa Maru is significant for cultural heritage and maritime history, showcasing Japan's shipbuilding technology and interior decoration from the early 20th century. This project not only aims to maintain the structural integrity of the vessel but also enhances public engagement with its historical legacy. By revitalizing the Yokohama waterfront, NYK contributes to cultural tourism and education, offering visitors a glimpse into Japan's maritime past. The initiative reflects the importance of preserving historical artifacts for future generations.
