What's Happening?
The Australian Defence Force has successfully conducted live-fire trials of its new 155 mm AS9 Huntsman self-propelled artillery system, marking a significant milestone in the development of the Army's combat capability. Produced by Hanwha Defense Australia,
the AS9 Huntsman is part of a contract that includes 30 self-propelled howitzers and 15 AS10 ammunition resupply vehicles. The acquisition program, which began in 2005, was revived in 2019, and the contract was signed in 2021. The trials represent the first introduction of a self-propelled artillery system into Australia's armed forces in several decades.
Why It's Important?
The successful trials of the AS9 Huntsman artillery system enhance Australia's military capabilities, providing the Army with advanced firepower and mobility. This development is crucial for maintaining national security and defense readiness. The acquisition of these systems also reflects Australia's commitment to modernizing its military infrastructure and strengthening its defense partnerships, particularly with South Korea. The introduction of the AS9 Huntsman is expected to improve the Army's operational effectiveness and strategic flexibility.
What's Next?
Following the live-fire trials, the AS9 Huntsman systems will undergo further training and preparation before being inducted into service with the Australian Army's 3rd Brigade. Deliveries of the howitzers and resupply vehicles are expected to continue over the next two years. The Australian Defence Force will focus on integrating these systems into its existing military framework, ensuring that personnel are adequately trained to operate and maintain the new equipment. The successful deployment of the AS9 Huntsman could also influence future defense procurement decisions.
