What's Happening?
The Flossmoor School District 161 Board of Education has unanimously approved a districtwide artificial intelligence (AI) implementation plan. This plan is designed to guide the use of AI technology in both classrooms and administrative settings starting
in the 2026-27 school year. The initiative aligns with a state requirement for Illinois school districts to adopt an AI plan by July 1. The plan emphasizes responsible and ethical AI use, focusing on academic integrity, student privacy, and critical thinking. It mandates that AI tools should only support learning after students demonstrate their understanding of the topic independently. Teachers are required to communicate when AI use is allowed, restricted, or prohibited, and students must disclose how AI tools are used in their work. The district has also included privacy safeguards, prohibiting the entry of personally identifiable student information into AI systems.
Why It's Important?
The approval of this AI plan is significant as it sets a precedent for how educational institutions can integrate advanced technology while maintaining ethical standards. By establishing clear guidelines, the district aims to enhance learning experiences without compromising academic integrity or student privacy. This move could influence other districts to adopt similar frameworks, promoting a standardized approach to AI in education. The plan also highlights the importance of digital citizenship and AI literacy, preparing students for a future where technology plays a crucial role in various aspects of life. The district's proactive approach may lead to improved educational outcomes and better prepare students for the technological demands of the modern workforce.
What's Next?
As part of the implementation process, the district will form an Instructional Technology Advisory Committee. This committee, comprising teachers, administrators, instructional coaches, technology staff, and district leadership, will meet over the summer to review policies, recommend professional development opportunities, and develop guidance materials for ethical AI use. The district also plans to expand digital citizenship and AI literacy instruction for students in grades 6-8. While there are currently no direct costs associated with the plan, the Board of Education may consider purchasing a district-approved enterprise AI platform in the future, ensuring compliance with state and federal privacy laws.
