student activism, particularly pro-Palestine movements. The consultancy, run by former military officials, was reportedly contracted to analyze open-source data, including social media activity, and provide security briefings on campus protests. The investigation claims that universities paid at least £440,000 for these services since 2022. Some universities have defended their actions, stating that the monitoring was for security purposes and did not target individual students.
