Zoo Atlanta, in collaboration with Georgia Tech researchers, is utilizing innovative technology to improve the mental and physical health of elephants. Arianna Mastali, a PhD student at Georgia Tech, has developed an interactive wall that emits low-frequency
sounds similar to those elephants hear in the wild. These sounds are designed to stimulate the elephants' keen hearing abilities without using natural elephant sounds, which could potentially confuse them. The wall's audio features are unique compared to similar enrichment tools in other zoos, as they are tailored to elicit specific behaviors such as trunk manipulation and sensory interaction. This initiative has resulted in the elephants spending twice as much time engaging with the wall.
