What's Happening?
Intrepid Travel has announced the launch of 28 new active trips for 2026, catering to travelers interested in hiking, cycling, kayaking, snorkeling, and rafting. These trips are designed to offer immersive
cultural experiences alongside outdoor activities, with destinations spanning Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. The new offerings include five multi-active trips, 21 walking and trekking trips, and two cycling trips, bringing the total number of active trips offered by Intrepid to 148. This expansion comes in response to a growing demand for active travel, with Intrepid reporting a 9% increase in bookings for such trips year-on-year. The company has also noted a 23% rise in interest for its multi-active range, which combines various physical activities.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Intrepid Travel's active trip offerings reflects a broader societal shift towards health and wellness. As more travelers seek active and nature-based experiences, the travel industry is adapting to meet this demand. The growth in active travel is part of a larger trend, with global cycling tourism expected to nearly double over the next decade and hiking tours projected to grow steadily. This shift is indicative of a lifestyle change where individuals prioritize health and well-being, as evidenced by increased participation in community run clubs and the expanding global wellness economy. Intrepid's new trips cater to this trend by providing opportunities for travelers to engage in physical activities while exploring new destinations.
What's Next?
Intrepid Travel's new active trips are set to begin in February 2026, offering travelers a range of options to explore diverse landscapes and cultures through physical activities. As the demand for active travel continues to rise, other travel companies may also expand their offerings to capture this growing market. The travel industry is likely to see further innovation in trip design, focusing on sustainability and immersive experiences that align with travelers' health and wellness goals. Intrepid's approach of combining physical activity with cultural immersion may set a precedent for future travel offerings.
Beyond the Headlines
The rise in active travel highlights a cultural shift towards valuing experiences that promote physical health and mental well-being. This trend may influence other sectors, such as hospitality and transportation, to adapt their services to accommodate active travelers. Additionally, the focus on sustainable and immersive travel experiences aligns with increasing consumer awareness of environmental and cultural preservation. As travelers seek more meaningful connections with destinations, the travel industry may see a push towards responsible tourism practices that benefit local communities and ecosystems.
