What's Happening?
Intermountain Health has inaugurated a new specialized Pregnancy After Loss Clinic at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah. This facility is one of only nine in the United States to receive certification from the United States Pregnancy After Loss Support
(USPAL) program. The clinic aims to provide comprehensive, compassionate, and trauma-informed care for women and families who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss and are now pursuing future pregnancies. The initiative addresses the complex emotional and medical needs associated with pregnancy after loss, recognizing that such experiences can bring a mix of hope, grief, anxiety, and uncertainty. The clinic's care model emphasizes mental health support and coordinated care, with all caregivers undergoing specialized trauma-informed training. Jessica Page, MD, an OB-GYN physician at the clinic, highlighted the importance of supporting families throughout their pregnancy journey with compassionate care and enhanced communication. Liz Hernandez, senior practice manager for the clinic, whose personal experience with loss shaped her understanding of patient needs, noted that a major part of their care model is recognizing the lasting emotional impact of pregnancy and infant loss.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of the Intermountain Pregnancy After Loss Clinic is significant for several reasons. Pregnancy loss is a widespread issue, with over 20,000 stillbirths annually in the U.S. and approximately one in four women experiencing some form of pregnancy loss. Despite its prevalence, specialized support for subsequent pregnancies has been limited. This new clinic fills a critical gap by offering a dedicated space where emotional and medical needs are addressed concurrently, reducing the burden on individuals navigating this challenging period. By integrating trauma-informed practices and mental health support, the clinic acknowledges the profound psychological impact of loss, which is often overlooked in traditional healthcare settings. The clinic's certification by USPAL also sets a national standard for specialized care, potentially influencing other healthcare providers to adopt similar models. This initiative not only improves patient outcomes by providing tailored care but also contributes to broader research efforts aimed at understanding and preventing pregnancy and infant loss, ultimately enhancing maternity care practices across the nation.
What's Next?
The Intermountain Pregnancy After Loss Clinic plans to extend its resources and consultation services to additional clinics within Intermountain Health, aiming to broaden its geographic reach and impact. This expansion will allow more families across the western U.S. to access specialized support. The clinic will also actively participate in research focused on pregnancy and infant loss, contributing to a deeper understanding of its causes and improving future maternity care. This research, in collaboration with the USPAL Network, seeks to uncover more answers regarding why losses occur and how best to care for patients with prior loss experiences. The ongoing commitment to research and the potential for wider implementation of their care model suggest a future where specialized support for pregnancy after loss becomes more accessible and standardized, ultimately improving the health and well-being of countless families.
Beyond the Headlines
The opening of this specialized clinic highlights a growing recognition within the healthcare industry of the need for more holistic and empathetic approaches to patient care, particularly in sensitive areas like reproductive health. It underscores a shift from purely physical treatment to one that integrates mental and emotional well-being as fundamental components of health. The involvement of individuals with personal experience, like Liz Hernandez, in shaping the clinic's care model, signifies a move towards patient-centered design where lived experiences directly inform clinical practices. This approach not only enhances the quality of care but also fosters a deeper sense of trust and understanding between patients and providers. Furthermore, the clinic's focus on research and evidence-based practices suggests a long-term commitment to advancing medical knowledge and improving outcomes, potentially leading to new insights and interventions that could benefit families globally.
