What's Happening?
Martyn Midgley, area highways manager for Gloucestershire County Council, has issued a warning to drivers about the risks of black ice on roads, even after they have been salted. As the UK faces snow,
ice, wind, and rain warnings, highways teams are spreading rock salt to lower the freezing point of water on roads. However, Midgley cautions that this does not guarantee ice-free roads, as black ice can still pose a significant risk. The salt used is effective down to -7°C, but its effectiveness decreases at lower temperatures. Midgley advises drivers to exercise caution by driving slower, braking gently, and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles.
Why It's Important?
The warning highlights the ongoing challenges faced by road safety authorities in ensuring safe travel during winter conditions. Despite the use of salt to mitigate ice formation, the presence of black ice remains a hazard that can lead to accidents. This situation underscores the importance of public awareness and adherence to safety guidelines to prevent road incidents. The effectiveness of road salting is crucial for maintaining transportation safety and minimizing disruptions during adverse weather conditions.
