What's Happening?
Denys Shtilerman, co-owner of Ukrainian drone and missile manufacturer Fire Point, has called for the deployment of medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) equipped with 30mm cannons to Ukraine. Speaking at the Eurosatory
trade show, Shtilerman emphasized the need for these systems to counter Russian glide bombs and drones, which are challenging to intercept with current air defense missiles. The proposed UAS would enhance Ukraine's ability to defend against persistent aerial threats by loitering in domestic airspace and intercepting incoming attacks.
Why It's Important?
The call for cannon-armed UAS highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Ukraine in defending against advanced aerial threats from Russia. The integration of such systems could significantly enhance Ukraine's defensive capabilities, providing a more effective means of intercepting precision-guided munitions and drones. This development underscores the evolving nature of modern warfare, where traditional air defense systems may be insufficient against sophisticated threats. The proposal also reflects the broader geopolitical tensions in the region and the need for innovative defense solutions to maintain national security.
