What's Happening?
The Hampton Roads Workforce Council has announced a collaboration with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) to expand internship opportunities for college students in the region. This initiative is a one-year pilot program designed to connect
employers, colleges, and students by aligning internships with the key workforce priorities of Hampton Roads. The program aims to assist employers in creating high-quality internship programs while supporting VEDP’s statewide Innovative Internship Program. Shawn Avery, president and CEO of the Hampton Roads Workforce Council, emphasized the importance of this partnership in bridging education and industry, creating new pathways for students to launch careers in Hampton Roads. The Workforce Council will leverage its Campus757 initiative, which has been connecting students with internships and community opportunities since 2020, offering career coaching, resume assistance, and professional development.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is significant as it addresses the critical need for talent development and retention in Virginia, particularly in the Hampton Roads region. By expanding internship opportunities, the program aims to provide students with real-world experience, thereby enhancing their employability and encouraging them to pursue careers within the state. This initiative not only benefits students by offering them valuable work experience but also supports local employers by helping them develop a skilled workforce. The collaboration is expected to strengthen the region's economic future by ensuring that young talent is nurtured and retained, contributing to the overall growth and competitiveness of Virginia's economy.
What's Next?
The pilot program will focus on creating and enhancing internship opportunities over the next year, with the potential for expansion based on its success. Stakeholders, including educational institutions and local businesses, are likely to monitor the program's outcomes closely. If successful, this model could be replicated in other regions, further strengthening the link between education and industry across Virginia. The program's progress and impact on student career paths and local economic development will be key indicators of its success.
