What's Happening?
India is advancing a comprehensive strategy to protect its farmers from the impacts of climate change. This initiative, led by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, integrates climate risk assessment,
resilient crop development, water management, capacity building, and financial safeguards. The National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) program is central to this strategy, conducting climate vulnerability assessments across 651 agricultural districts. The findings indicate that 310 districts are climate-vulnerable. To address these vulnerabilities, India has developed District Agriculture Contingency Plans, providing location-specific strategies for managing weather aberrations. Implementation is driven through Krishi Vigyan Kendras, demonstrating climate-resilient technologies across 151 districts. The strategy also includes capacity building, establishment of village-level seed banks, and promotion of climate-resilient crop varieties.
