New research indicates that the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, initially developed to prevent cervical cancer in women, is now significantly protecting men from head and neck cancers. An observational study conducted in the U.S. involving 1.4 million
individuals aged 9 to 45 found that HPV vaccination is associated with a nearly 70% reduction in head and neck cancers. These cancers, particularly oropharyngeal cancers, are among the fastest-rising cancer types in U.S. men, with approximately 85% of the 16,000 annual cases caused by HPV occurring in males. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration fast-tracked the expansion of the HPV vaccine to include prevention of head and neck cancers in both sexes in 2020, and emerging data now support this decision.
