The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has announced that more than 99% of roads damaged by Hurricane Helene have been reopened. Secretary Daniel Johnson provided an update from Chimney Rock, highlighting the extensive efforts by NCDOT staff
to restore access. Major projects, such as the Hickory Nut Gorge and Interstate 40 in the Pigeon River Gorge, are still underway, with completion expected in 2029 and 2028, respectively.
