What's Happening?
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has recommended that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) review its policy regarding whether students who complete aviation maintenance curricula at non-FAA-certificated high schools should be allowed to
take the agency's general written knowledge test. The GAO identified at least 43 such high school programs. Currently, students from these uncertificated programs generally cannot immediately take the general test, which is the first of three FAA knowledge tests required for airframe and powerplant ratings, unless they have significant practical experience or pursue additional coursework at an FAA-certificated school. The FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 directed the FAA to establish an Airman Knowledge Testing Working Group by May 2025 to assess this issue, but the GAO found that the FAA had not yet established the group or obtained the required assessment, citing interruptions due to the termination of advisory committee members.
