In April 2026, electric vehicle (EV) sales in Australia reached nearly 27% of the total vehicle market, with 25,087 plugin vehicles sold out of 94,049 total vehicle sales. This growth is attributed to increased supply, higher petrol prices, and government
incentives such as the Electric Car Discount. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 15,459 units, while plugin hybrids (PHEVs) saw 9,628 units sold. The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) noted that the continuation of the Electric Car Discount into 2027 will sustain this momentum. The market has seen a decline in diesel and petrol vehicle sales, with diesel down 21.7% and petrol down 30% year-on-year. The Toyota RAV4 hybrid remains the highest-selling car, with BYD closely following as a leading EV brand.
