Students in grades 3 through 5 at Starbuck International K-8 School are now participating in the Racine Food Waste Composting Committee’s program by collecting cafeteria food scraps. This initiative marks the first school involvement in the program, which
commenced in April 2024. The committee reports that participating households in Racine have already diverted approximately 28,600 pounds of organic material from landfills, converting it into compost for soil replenishment. Sister Janet Weyker, a committee spokesperson, highlighted the potential for rapid growth in the program with the addition of students setting aside daily cafeteria food waste, aiming to establish a model for other schools and institutions. Committee members will educate students on composting and oversee collections during the initial weeks of the school year, with selected students serving as 'Composting Captains' to assist in collecting discarded food. The school's participation follows a successful four-week pilot program in May involving fourth-grade students, who collected an average of 40 pounds of cafeteria food waste weekly.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has set a goal to halve the 900,000 tons of food waste sent to landfills annually by Wisconsin households by 2030, and the Racine program's expansion, particularly through school involvement, is a direct contribution towards this statewide objective.
