What's Happening?
PSA Zeebrugge has unveiled a new installation of nearly 1,900 solar panels, mounted vertically on the facade of their warehouses at the port terminal. This installation, completed by Insaver, part of the Luminus Group, generates 770 megawatt-hours (MWh)
annually, covering half of the terminal's electricity consumption. The project was inaugurated by Dirk De fauw, Mayor of Bruges, and is one of the largest vertical solar panel installations in Belgium. The initiative is part of PSA Belgium's broader goal to halve its 2019 CO2-emission levels by 2030 and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it highlights the growing trend of companies investing in renewable energy to meet sustainability goals and regulatory requirements. By reducing CO2 emissions and energy costs, PSA Zeebrugge is contributing to the decarbonization of the electrical grid. The project aligns with the Flemish government's mandate for companies with high electricity consumption to source part of their energy from solar panels. This move not only supports environmental goals but also enhances energy independence and competitiveness in the region.
What's Next?
PSA is exploring further steps to source 100% of the electricity required by the Zeebrugge terminal from locally produced renewable energy. The company aims to continue investing in innovative solutions to meet its sustainability targets and contribute to PSA International's ambition of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This could involve expanding the use of renewable energy sources and implementing additional energy-saving technologies.
