What's Happening?
The Tuscarawas Valley Farmers Market has partnered with Dover-Phila Federal Credit Union to enhance food access for residents facing food insecurity. The credit union has donated $20,000 to support the
market's Donation Station program, which collects and distributes fresh produce to local food pantries. The program, now in its fifth year, connects local farmers, market shoppers, and volunteers to provide high-quality produce to area residents. In 2025, the program distributed over 4,800 pounds of food, and with the new funding, organizers aim to donate 25,000 pounds in 2026.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is crucial for addressing food insecurity in Tuscarawas County by providing fresh, locally grown produce to those in need. The partnership between the farmers market and the credit union exemplifies community collaboration to tackle social issues. By supporting local agriculture and ensuring food reaches those who need it most, the program not only aids in hunger relief but also strengthens the local economy. The success of this program could serve as a model for other communities seeking to address similar challenges.
What's Next?
With the new funding, the Donation Station program will aim to significantly increase its food distribution efforts in 2026. Local food pantries and soup kitchens are encouraged to participate in the program to maximize its reach. The farmers market will continue to operate from June through mid-October, providing a platform for ongoing community engagement and support. The success of this initiative may inspire further partnerships and funding opportunities to expand its impact.
