What's Happening?
The General Agricultural Workers’ Union (GAWU) has called on the government to establish a Ghana Agriculture Service (GAS) to provide sustained support and accountability in the agricultural sector. In
a statement marking National Farmers’ Day, GAWU highlighted the need for a dedicated service to improve the farmer-to-extension officer ratio, which currently stands at 1:1,500, far exceeding the international standard of 1:500. The union praised government initiatives like the Presidential Initiatives in Agriculture and Agribusiness but warned that without a structured service, these efforts might lack continuity and effectiveness.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of a Ghana Agriculture Service could significantly enhance the support and resources available to farmers, leading to improved productivity and sustainability in the sector. By institutionalizing agricultural support, the government can ensure that policies are proactive, consistent, and effectively implemented. This move could also address the current shortage of extension officers, providing farmers with the necessary guidance and resources to overcome challenges such as floods, droughts, and high input costs. A dedicated service would align agriculture with other sectors like health and education, which already have structured support systems.
