What's Happening?
Simon & Schuster U.S. and S&S U.K. have announced the launch of Scarlett Press, a new imprint dedicated to publishing romance-forward New Adult titles. The imprint aims to cater to readers in their late teens and 20s with a focus on 'commercial, fast-paced' romance stories across various genres. The inaugural slate includes five books set to be published in the spring, featuring titles such as Tiffany Hunt’s 'The Dark Lord’s Guide to Dating (and Other War Crimes)' and Marion Blackwood’s 'Empire of Flame and Thorns.' Scarlett Press plans to publish 12-15 titles annually, including both original works and previously self-published books. The U.S. side of the imprint will be led by SVP and publisher Justin Chanda, with executive editors Sarah McCabe and Kate Prosswimmer overseeing acquisitions.
Why It's Important?
The launch of Scarlett Press signifies a renewed interest in the New Adult category, which had seen a decline after its initial popularity 10 to 15 years ago. This move by Simon & Schuster reflects a broader industry trend of reinvesting in this demographic, as evidenced by Penguin's recent launch of its own crossover imprint, Berkley XO. By targeting readers transitioning from young adult to adult fiction, Scarlett Press aims to capture a market segment that seeks more mature themes and complex narratives. This strategic expansion could potentially boost Simon & Schuster's market share in the romance genre, appealing to a generation of readers looking for stories that resonate with their life stage.
What's Next?
Scarlett Press is set to release its first titles in the spring, with plans to continue expanding its catalog. The imprint's success could influence other publishers to explore or re-enter the New Adult market, potentially leading to increased competition and innovation in the genre. As Scarlett Press establishes its presence, it may also explore partnerships with authors who have a strong following in the self-publishing space, further diversifying its offerings.
Beyond the Headlines
The resurgence of the New Adult category could have cultural implications, as it provides a platform for exploring themes relevant to early adulthood, such as identity, independence, and complex relationships. This focus on new adulthood may also encourage more diverse storytelling, reflecting the varied experiences of young adults today. Additionally, the imprint's success could inspire other genres to explore similar age-focused narratives, broadening the scope of literature available to this demographic.
