The UK Space Agency has announced a £13 million funding initiative for 16 satellite projects aimed at developing the sector and delivering economic benefits across the country. This investment is part of a broader effort by the UK government to ensure
a sovereign and competitive satellite industry, having previously catalyzed £2.2 billion in investment and revenue for the UK space sector between 2024 and 2025. The projects range from technical research and development to pilot connectivity programs in rural areas. Notable allocations include £2.1 million for Exobotics Ltd's STARS project to develop next-generation optical communications, £1.845 million for Project Optimus for laser communications, and £1.5 million for Airbus's Theia project for reprogrammable satellite processor functions. Smaller grants are also targeting tangible benefits for UK citizens, such as £428,000 for CGI’s SODOR project to provide reliable broadband on a rural Scottish railway line and £199,000 for Farmer Charlie’s GAUFF Sensor project to develop satellite-linked agricultural sensors for areas with poor terrestrial connectivity. These initiatives are delivered through the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Advanced Research in Telecommunication Systems (ARTES) programme, supported by the UK Space Agency.
