What's Happening?
Guåhan Sustainable Culture (GSC) has launched the Ginen I Halom Tåno’ initiative to address the threat posed by feral pigs to agriculture and sustainable land use in Guam. The program aims to empower local residents with skills to protect their land and provide
food for the community. It includes guided hunts, mentorship for youth and new hunters, and partnerships with local businesses to support culling efforts. An Island Wide Derby is planned for May to engage the community and local businesses.
Why It's Important?
The initiative addresses a significant environmental and agricultural challenge in Guam, where feral pigs threaten crops and land use. By involving the community and local businesses, GSC aims to create a sustainable solution that enhances food security and land stewardship. The program also promotes cultural values and practical skills, contributing to community resilience and environmental conservation. It highlights the importance of community-driven approaches to environmental challenges.
What's Next?
GSC will continue to develop partnerships with grocery stores and markets to support its culling efforts. The Island Wide Derby in May will serve as a platform to engage the community and raise awareness about the initiative. The program's success could lead to similar efforts in other regions facing challenges from invasive species, promoting sustainable land management practices.
