California announced on August 17 that it will implement the nation’s first energy-efficiency standards for replacement tires, with the first phase beginning in 2028. The California Energy Commission approved this new program to address the efficiency gap
between original equipment (OE) tires and replacement tires, aiming to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 2 million metric tons and save California drivers nearly $1 billion annually in fuel costs. The standards will require all passenger-car and light-duty-truck replacement tires manufactured on or after January 1, 2028, to meet new efficiency benchmarks.
