What's Happening?
Vermont Governor Phil Scott has signed an executive order mandating state agencies to prioritize local news outlets and broadcast organizations for state advertising expenditures. This initiative aims to bolster local journalism by ensuring that state advertising dollars
are spent within Vermont's media landscape. The order, signed on July 23, requires transparency in state advertising and establishes a framework for annual reporting on advertising spending. The Vermont Journalism Coalition and the Vermont Association of Broadcasters, along with the national nonprofit Rebuild Local News, have expressed support for this move, highlighting its potential to sustain local media organizations. Vermont currently has around 50 active local news organizations, and this order is seen as a strategic move to maintain these essential community resources.
Why It's Important?
The executive order is significant as it represents a proactive step by the state government to support local journalism, which has been under financial strain nationwide. By directing advertising dollars to local media, the state not only helps sustain these organizations but also ensures that Vermonters receive comprehensive coverage of local issues, such as education, healthcare, and local businesses. This move could serve as a model for other states looking to support their local media ecosystems. The initiative is expected to enhance the vibrancy of Vermont communities by providing them with better access to information and fostering civic engagement.
What's Next?
The implementation of the executive order will involve the State’s Communications and Marketing Office, which will oversee the process of integrating local media into state advertising strategies. Annual reporting will provide insights into the effectiveness of this initiative and its impact on local media sustainability. Other states may observe Vermont's approach as a potential model for supporting local journalism, especially in regions where media outlets are struggling to survive.
