What's Happening?
Hormel Foods Corporation has initiated a recall of approximately 4.87 million pounds of frozen chicken products due to potential metal contamination. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that the affected
products include various Hormel Fire Braised Meats All Natural Boneless Chicken Breast and Thigh Meat items. These products, bearing the establishment number P-223, were distributed to HRI Commercial Food Service locations nationwide between February 10 and September 19, 2025. The recall was prompted by multiple customer complaints about metal particles found in the products, traced back to a conveyor belt used in production. The FSIS has expressed concern that some of these products may still be in the freezers of hotels, restaurants, and institutions.
Why It's Important?
The recall highlights significant food safety concerns, as foreign materials in food products can pose serious health risks, including choking and internal injuries. This incident underscores the importance of stringent quality control measures in food production. The recall could impact Hormel Foods' reputation and financial performance, as well as the operations of food service providers who rely on these products. Additionally, it raises awareness about the potential hazards of metal contamination in food processing, prompting other companies to review their safety protocols.
What's Next?
Hormel Foods and the FSIS are actively working to ensure that the recalled products are removed from circulation. Businesses and institutions that have the affected products are advised to dispose of them immediately. The FSIS will continue to monitor the situation and conduct recall effectiveness checks to verify that the products are no longer available to consumers. Hormel Foods has communicated with its customers and is cooperating with the FSIS to address the issue.
