What's Happening?
Ford Motor Company is recalling approximately 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks in the United States following an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into reports of unexpected downshifts. The recall affects model
years 2015-2017 equipped with the '6R80' transmission. The issue, potentially caused by electrical connections wearing down due to heat and vibration, can lead to signal loss from the transmission range sensor, resulting in unintended downshifts. Ford has acknowledged two injuries and one accident potentially related to this issue. Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to visit a Ford or Lincoln dealer for a software update to the powertrain control module (PCM) to remedy the problem.
Why It's Important?
This recall is significant as it addresses a safety concern that could lead to accidents, posing risks to drivers and passengers. The recall highlights the importance of vehicle safety standards and the role of regulatory bodies like the NHTSA in ensuring compliance. For Ford, this recall could impact consumer trust and brand reputation, especially given the scale of the recall. It also underscores the need for ongoing vigilance in monitoring vehicle performance and addressing potential defects promptly to prevent accidents and injuries.
What's Next?

Remedy owner notification letters will be mailed between July 13 and July 17. Affected owners can check their vehicle's recall status using their VIN starting April 15. Ford will replace the lead frame for vehicles exhibiting certain diagnostic trouble codes prior to the software installation, at no charge, under an extended warranty program.
