What's Happening?
The Community College System of New Hampshire (CCSNH) and Lakes Region Community College (LRCC) have been awarded a $1.2 million Training for Residential Energy Contractors (TREC) grant by the New Hampshire Executive
Council. This funding aims to address the growing demand for energy contractors in the state. Additionally, a $32.4 million contract with Everblue has been approved to support the Home Energy Rebate’s (HERs) Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) program. LRCC will spearhead the TREC training, collaborating closely with Everblue to implement programs expected to run through 2029. The initiative focuses on reducing residential energy costs in rural New Hampshire by promoting electrification with cold-climate heat pumps and other energy-efficiency measures. The program will offer substantial tuition awards and support for participants, aiming to benefit training participants, employers, and homeowners.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it addresses the critical need for skilled energy contractors in New Hampshire, particularly in rural areas where high-cost fuels are prevalent. By promoting electrification and energy efficiency, the program aims to lower energy costs for homeowners, contributing to economic relief and environmental sustainability. The training will equip participants with essential skills, enhancing their employability and enabling employers to expand their service offerings. This development is poised to stimulate the local economy by creating job opportunities and fostering a skilled workforce capable of supporting the state's energy transition goals.
What's Next?
The TREC program will develop specific career training pathways for roles such as heat pump and electrification specialists. LRCC will collaborate with manufacturers and distributors to provide advanced training for technical positions. A core offering will be the 'Home Energy Rebates Advisor' training, which will help contractors integrate HEAR rebates into their work. The program will also include business and soft skills training, with LRCC working alongside other community colleges and trade groups to support workforce development. These efforts are expected to continue through 2029, with ongoing collaboration between educational institutions and industry partners.
