What's Happening?
A recent report by the marketing agency Fractl, commissioned by Sallie Mae, reveals that Gen Z students are increasingly using TikTok to search for college scholarships. The report, based on a survey of 274 undergraduates, found that 68% of Gen Z students occasionally
use TikTok for this purpose, with 20% doing so weekly. While 60% of these students reported discovering new scholarships through TikTok, the platform also exposes them to scams and misinformation. About a third of the students encountered misleading content, such as non-existent scholarships and incorrect eligibility requirements. Despite these risks, students tend to trust personal success stories and advice from peers on TikTok more than from certified financial advisers or official scholarship organizations.
Why It's Important?
The trend of using TikTok for scholarship searches highlights the platform's growing influence on educational decisions among Gen Z. This shift underscores the need for reliable information and the potential for misinformation to mislead students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds who are more susceptible to scams. The reliance on TikTok also reflects a broader trend of digital platforms shaping educational and financial decisions, which could impact how students access higher education funding. The report suggests a shared responsibility among colleges, scholarship providers, and platforms to ensure credible information is available to students.
What's Next?
To mitigate the risks associated with using TikTok for scholarship searches, educational institutions and scholarship providers may need to increase their presence on the platform to provide accurate information. This could involve creating verified accounts that offer trustworthy scholarship advice and resources. Additionally, there may be a push for digital literacy programs to help students critically evaluate online information. As TikTok continues to be a popular tool among students, its role in educational guidance is likely to expand, necessitating ongoing efforts to ensure the reliability of the content shared.
