A 12-week pilot study conducted by Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) indicates that time-restricted eating, a form of intermittent fasting, may offer a promising approach to slowing the progression of Huntington's disease. The study, published
in Nature Metabolism, involved people with early-stage Huntington's disease who limited their food consumption to a six-to-eight-hour window daily. Participants successfully adhered to the eating schedule, maintained their body weight and lean muscle mass, and reported few side effects. Researchers observed improvements in measures of disease severity, a reduction in a blood biomarker linked to nerve cell damage (neurofilament light), and enhanced cellular energy production. This marks the first clinical study to investigate time-restricted eating in individuals with Huntington's disease, a rare, inherited neurological disorder that progressively damages nerve cells.

This research is significant because there are currently no approved treatments that can slow or stop the progression of Huntington's disease, which affects approximately 41,000 Americans and puts over 200,000 others at risk.
