What's Happening?
The U.S. Department of Interior's Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) has allocated $134 million in funding for the 2026 fiscal year through the Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization (AMLER) program. Since its inception
in 2016, AMLER has been instrumental in transforming coal mining sites into economic opportunities, supporting workforce development, infrastructure, and community-led redevelopment across Appalachia and tribal lands. The program has funded projects that range from energy infrastructure to manufacturing and tourism, aiming to restore opportunity for coal communities that have historically powered the nation.
Why It's Important?
The AMLER program is vital for revitalizing coal communities that have faced economic challenges due to the decline of the coal industry. By investing in infrastructure and community development, the program helps create jobs and stimulate local economies, providing a sustainable path forward for these regions. The transformation of abandoned mine lands into productive sites demonstrates a commitment to addressing environmental legacies while fostering economic growth. This initiative not only supports local communities but also contributes to broader national goals of energy transition and economic diversification.
