Scientists have identified a new application for upadacitinib, a medication typically used for rheumatoid arthritis, in treating alopecia areata (AA). Two international Phase III trials, involving 1,399 participants, demonstrated that upadacitinib significantly
aided hair regrowth in individuals with AA. The drug works by inhibiting Janus kinase (JAK) enzymes, which are involved in immune responses that contribute to hair loss in AA. Nearly half of the participants receiving a 15 mg dose of upadacitinib achieved 80% or more scalp-hair coverage within 24 weeks, with this figure rising to over 54% for those on a 30 mg dose. In contrast, only about 2% of the placebo group saw similar regrowth. The improvements extended beyond the scalp, with patients also experiencing regrowth in eyebrows and eyelashes, and reporting enhanced emotional and social well-being.
