What's Happening?
Columbia College students, alumni, and staff organized a benefit concert to support Kathrynn Vettas, a senior audio arts major diagnosed with stage two Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The event, named 'Care for Kathrynn,' was held at Bassline and featured performances
by 17 artists from the Columbia community. Proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales were directed to Vettas's GoFundMe to assist with her medical expenses. The concert, attended by around 100 people, was organized by Sessions @ 33, with faculty advisor Tom Joyce aiming to bring positivity and solidarity during a challenging time. Vettas expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support, highlighting the strong sense of community at Columbia.
Why It's Important?
The benefit concert exemplifies the power of community support in times of personal crisis. It highlights the role of educational institutions in fostering environments where students and faculty can come together to support one another beyond academic pursuits. The event not only provided financial assistance to Vettas but also reinforced the importance of empathy and solidarity within the student body. Such initiatives can significantly impact the morale and well-being of individuals facing health challenges, demonstrating the broader societal value of community-driven support systems.
