What's Happening?
The Latino Community Foundation (LCF) has announced that its total grantmaking since 2018 has exceeded $50 million. This milestone is part of LCF's mission to empower Latino communities across the United States. In the first quarter of 2026, LCF awarded
over $3 million to organizations serving Latino communities and launched its first national fund, the Community Protection Fund. This fund aims to support grassroots organizations responding to immigration enforcement actions and community safety efforts. LCF's investments also focus on voter mobilization, research on immigration's economic impact, and recovery efforts for communities affected by the Los Angeles wildfires. LCF CEO Julián Castro emphasized the importance of investing in grassroots leadership to ensure Latino communities have the resources to thrive.
Why It's Important?
The Latino Community Foundation's efforts are significant as they address the underfunding of Latino-serving organizations, which receive less than 2% of philanthropic funding despite Latinos comprising nearly one-fifth of the U.S. population. By surpassing $50 million in grantmaking, LCF is not only meeting urgent needs but also building long-term power within Latino communities. This initiative is crucial in a time when Latino families face economic instability and harmful immigration policies. LCF's national expansion and the development of a $250 million endowment aim to close the funding gap and ensure sustained investment in Latino communities, which are vital to the nation's cultural and economic growth.
What's Next?
LCF plans to continue its national expansion with the goal of building a $250 million endowment to support Latino communities for generations. The foundation's focus will remain on empowering grassroots organizations and advancing economic opportunities, civic participation, and community resilience. As LCF scales its vision nationally, it will likely influence other philanthropic organizations to increase their investments in Latino communities, potentially leading to a more inclusive and prosperous future for the U.S.
