What's Happening?
Mexico's Ministry of Tourism participated in the USMCA Tourism Sector Forum to bolster the country's tourism sector ahead of the upcoming review of the trilateral agreement between Mexico, the United States,
and Canada. The forum, held at the Ministry of Economy, included representatives from airlines, business chambers, hotel associations, and public and private organizations. Rodrigo Cerda Cornejo, Director General of Planning, emphasized the importance of integrating the sector's concerns into Mexico's position for the trade pact. The forum focused on harmonizing tourism standards, trilateral cooperation in investment, mobility, and tourism promotion, and recognizing specialized segments such as medical, wellness, and MICE tourism. The Ministry of Economy will compile the information gathered to define Mexico's position in the review process.
Why It's Important?
The participation of Mexico's Ministry of Tourism in the USMCA forum is crucial for strengthening the country's tourism sector, which is a significant driver of employment and economic development. By addressing the concerns and opportunities within the tourism industry, Mexico aims to enhance its competitiveness and strategic position in North America. The harmonization of tourism standards and cooperation in investment and mobility can lead to increased tourism flows and economic benefits for all three countries involved in the USMCA. This effort aligns with Mexico's goal of promoting a more competitive, sustainable, and inclusive tourism model.
What's Next?
The Ministry of Economy, with technical support from the Ministry of Tourism, will compile the information from the forum to define Mexico's position for the upcoming USMCA review. This position will be presented to Mexico's commercial partners, aiming to strengthen the country's tourism sector and its role within the trilateral agreement. The focus will be on promoting shared prosperity through tourism, as instructed by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
