However, more than half of the captured carbon was re-emitted to the atmosphere within decades after fertilization ceased. The study highlighted regional variations, with ecosystems in the Southern Ocean recovering post-fertilization, unlike those in the equatorial Pacific, which experienced prolonged ecological disturbances. The findings suggest that relocating fertilization efforts to higher latitudes could mitigate environmental costs associated with lower-latitude oceans.
