What's Happening?
Jodeci Mcpherson, a bird owner from Ilkeston, is seeking public assistance to locate his missing Harris hawk, Ivar, which has been missing for over two weeks. The hawk, identifiable by the 'sleigh bell'
anklets it wears, flew away from Rutland Recreation Ground after being intimidated by other birds. Despite several sightings, including one at a petrol station on Derby Road, Ivar has not returned to Mcpherson's glove. Mcpherson, who has trained Ivar since she was sixteen weeks old, is concerned about her ability to survive in the wild due to her lack of hunting skills. He remains hopeful, citing instances of Harris hawks being retrieved after extended periods away from their owners.
Why It's Important?
The situation highlights the challenges faced by bird owners when their trained birds of prey go missing. Harris hawks, like Ivar, are often used in shows and presentations, and their training requires significant time and effort. The loss of such a bird not only represents a personal loss for the owner but also raises concerns about the bird's welfare in the wild. The public's involvement in reporting sightings is crucial for the potential recovery of the bird, demonstrating the importance of community support in such situations.
What's Next?
Mcpherson continues to search for Ivar, utilizing reports from the public and assistance from falconer friends who are using thermal imaging and dogs to locate the hawk. The ongoing search efforts and new sightings provide hope for Ivar's safe return. Mcpherson is encouraging anyone who hears the distinct sound of the 'sleigh bells' to report it, as this could lead to the hawk's recovery.
