What's Happening?
A high-level roundtable organized by the Trust for Advancement of Agricultural Sciences (TAAS), in collaboration with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Federation of Seed Industry
of India (FSII), has called for accelerated approval processes for genetically modified (GM) and genome-edited (GE) crops in India. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare highlighted the need for a more efficient, transparent, and globally competitive biotechnology regulatory system. The roundtable emphasized the importance of evolving the regulatory framework to keep pace with advances in biotechnology while maintaining high biosafety standards. Participants stressed the need for timely adoption of safe GM and GE crops to enhance climate resilience, productivity, and nutritional security.
Why It's Important?
The push for faster approvals of GM and GE crops in India is significant as it could lead to increased agricultural productivity and climate resilience. By streamlining the regulatory process, India aims to enhance its global competitiveness in agricultural biotechnology. The adoption of these technologies could improve farmer incomes and contribute to food and nutritional security. This development is crucial for addressing the challenges posed by climate change and ensuring sustainable agricultural growth. The recommendations from the roundtable could influence policy reforms that promote responsible innovation while safeguarding human health and the environment.
