What's Happening?
Kenya has officially launched the World Agriculture Forum (WAF) Country Council, aiming to transform its agriculture sector through the integration of artificial intelligence and bioengineering. This initiative
is part of Kenya's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda and aligns with the AI Strategy 2025-2030, as well as continental frameworks like CAADP and Agenda 2063. The launch event, held at the International Livestock Research Institute in Nairobi, brought together government officials, global agriculture leaders, and investors to discuss how converging technologies can enhance productivity and resilience in Kenya's food systems. The WAF platform will focus on initiatives such as the Global Soil Health Coalition and the Global Digital Agriculture Council to drive smarter agricultural systems.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of the WAF Country Council in Kenya is significant as it positions the country as a leader in agricultural innovation on the continent. By leveraging AI and bioengineering, Kenya aims to address challenges such as climate change, trade barriers, and population growth, which impact food security and agricultural productivity. The initiative is expected to increase yields, improve farmer incomes, and contribute to socio-economic transformation. This move could attract global investors and foster public-private partnerships, ultimately strengthening Kenya's agricultural sector and enhancing its resilience against global challenges.
What's Next?
The WAF Kenya Country Council plans to hold its first meeting within 30 days to establish technical working groups. These groups will focus on aligning regulations, developing financing models, and creating safeguards to protect farmers while promoting the adoption of AI and bioengineering solutions. By 2028, the Council aims to establish a scalable model that connects global investors to local agricultural innovation, further solidifying Kenya's role as a hub for agri-tech convergence.
